Chlorine Gas Concerns
For many years the industry standard for disinfecting has been chlorine gas. Shipping, storing and handling of this hazardous material has become a major issue. Public concern of potential accidental releases has resulted in more stringent regulations by the Uniform Fire Code, OSHA and EPA. These strict regulations have drastically increased costs, resulting in the search for less dangerous and less expensive treatment methods.

Bulk Sodium Hypochlorite Concerns
One alternative is liquid sodium hypochlorite. Unfortunately, it is classified as a hazardous material and has shipping, storing and handling issues similar to that of chlorine. At 15% strength, sodium hypochlorite will significantly degrade over a period of weeks or even days and requires double containment of tanks and piping.

Calcium Chlorite Concerns
Another consideration is dry calcium hypochlorite (HTH). Frequent cleaning of deposits from tanks, pumps and piping are required increasing maintenance costs. This process may be satisfactory for very small applications, however, it would be too costly for large systems. The potential risk of a fire or explosion can result when calcium chlorite comes in contact with organics.

Safe Solution
The safe alternative is OSG Technology's process for generating sodium hypochlorite on-site. This very reliable, cost effective and easily operated automated system produces a non-hazardous very stable solution of sodium hypochlorite as required. Many utilities and industries throughout the United States are utilizing this time proven technology for treating their water and wastewater.

OSG Technology Process
OSG Technology's process for generating sodium hypochlorite on-site is relatively simple. Softened water is used to dissolve salt into a saturated brine solution. The brine is then diluted with softened water to a 3% concentration and passed through a cell containing titanium electrodes. The electrodes receive a low voltage DC current producing a dilute 0.8% sodium hypochlorite solution.
This non-hazardous solution is stored in a day tank for distribution by a metering pump to the point of injection. Production of the sodium hypochlorite is automatically controlled by an ultra sonic level control in the day tank. A PLC or CPU controls and monitors the entire system. Salt is the only material required to be handled. A small amount of hydrogen gas is the only by-product of this process and is safely vented directly to the atmosphere from both the day tank and cell. The OSG automated on-site generation systems are safe and simple to operate and maintain. The process is SCADA compatible and can be configured to meet specific customers requirements. The OSG systems will safely and efficiently generate from 3 to 900 pounds of equivalent chlorine per day.
